Two Fridays ago, I met my new
conversation partner, Guilherme, again. I wrote a lot about him on my last
conversation partner post, but in case you don’t want to go back and read it,
I’ll summarize here. Guilherme is a student in the Intensive English Program
here at TCU from Brazil. He has a law degree there, and he hopes to get his MBA
from TCU in the future. Also, he laughs at almost everything we talk about. He
seems like a really happy guy.
This
Friday we went to McAllister’s to meet instead of the Rec. I think both of us
were happy for the change because it was right at lunchtime. I got there first
and went ahead and ordered my food and sat down at a table. I saw a few of my
friends while I was waiting for Guilherme, so I talked to them for a bit.
After
Guilherme ordered his lunch and sat down, I noticed that he was wearing a Lord
of the Rings shirt. I’m a big fan of the movies, but I have never read the
books (mostly because they are GINORMOUS and I’m lazy). I keep telling myself
that I will read them someday, but it hasn’t happened yet and probably never
will. As it turns out, Guilherme really likes the series, too. But he has seen
the movies and read the books, which is pretty impressive.
We
spent a good while talking about the how good the movies were, and then we
talked about the differences between the books and the movies. Obviously, Peter
Jackson (the director of the movies) couldn’t possibly fit all of the action
and story from the books into the movies, but we agreed that he did a great job
with the time constraints of a motion picture production.
Then
we started talking about other movies that were adapted from books. We
discussed series like Harry Potter, Ender’s Game (which was just recently made
into a movie- go see it!), The Hunger Games, and a few others. I am a big fan
of Ender’s Game, so I talked at length about all the things that were left out
of the movie or that could have been done differently. Overall, I thought it
was a good adaptation, but it really needed to be broken up into two or
possibly even three films to do the book justice.
It was a fun meeting, and we met a few more times that week. I will post my thoughts on those meetings shortly.
